Weddings in Cyprus: Legal Requirements & Documentation required
 

 

How soon do we need to book?
Paperwork is processed once you arrive at your resort in Cyprus. Your stay must be a minimum of
7 nights.

Documentation required for Weddings in Cyprus:
You will need to TAKE WITH YOU to CYPRUS ALL DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW (relating to your status):

Important: Please note that only ‘original documents’ or ‘certified copies’ will be accepted.
You can obtain ‘certified copies’ from a solicitor in the UK.

YOUR PASSPORT - COMPULSORY: Both the bride and groom must be in possession of a 10-year British passport. Non-British passport holders must notify us at first contact.

WRITTEN CONSENT FOR UNDER 18'S - IF APPLICABLE: Written consent from parents/guardians must be supplied to us with the ‘Application for Marriage’ form if either the bride or groom is under the age of 18 years.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE - COMPULSORY: An original Birth Certificate, showing both parents names, must be obtained by bride & groom.

ADOPTION CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: An Adoption Certificate must be obtained if either the bride
or groom has been adopted.

DEED POOL CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: A Deed Poll Certificate must be obtained if either the bride or groom has changed her/his name for any reason (including personal reason; remarriage of a parent or
if the bride reverted to her maiden name after divorcing, etc.). This document must be stamped and signed
by a solicitor and must include the solicitor’s practice name and address plus the full name of the solicitor
who witnessed the change of name.

AFFIDAVIT - COMPULSORY - ISSUED IN UK OR CYPRUS: For weddings in Cyprus both the bride and groom need an Affidavit as legal proof that they are both free to marry. It is best to have this issued in Cyprus at
a cost of €8 plus your own expense to travel to the court. However, you may prefer to obtain this certificate in UK to save on travelling time and expenses to Limassol or Paphos (for weddings in Latchi, Pissouri & Aphrodite’s Rock) or to Paralimni (for weddings in Ayia Napa & Protaras). This certificate can be issued by a solicitor,
a commissioner of oaths or a notary public and must not be dated more than 3 months prior
to your wedding date.

DECREE ABSOLUTE - IF APPLICABLE: An original Decree Absolute, carrying a coloured court stamp,
must be obtained if either the bride or groom has been previously married and is now divorced.

DEATH CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: A Death Certificate must be obtained if either the bride or groom
is widowed.

Civil Weddings in Cyprus:
You will need to obtain and take with you to Cyprus all original documents listed above, relating to your status. All the paperwork will be processed once you arrive in the resort. Weddings in Style shall assist you locally to complete the various procedures and make appointments regarding: (1) Your visit to the Registry Office to register your intent to marry; (2) Your visit to the Court to legalise the Declaration of Oath (applicable charge of approx. €8 to be paid locally); (3) Your return to the Registry Office for a witnessed reading of the Oath and reconfirmation of the day and time of your wedding. Your Wedding
Co-ordinator in Cyprus will obtain the ‘Special Licence’ on your behalf that authorises your wedding to take place during your stay.

Anglican Church Weddings & Blessings in Cyprus:
All religious weddings and blessings except those performed by an Anglican Priest must be preceded by a civil ceremony (therefore, please also check requirements for ‘Civil Weddings’ shown above). You will need to obtain and take with you to Cyprus all original documents listed above, relating to your status. All the paperwork will be processed once you arrive in the resort. We shall assist you locally to complete the various procedures including your visit to meet the person responsible to conduct your wedding/blessing.
N.B: for all Anglican church weddings, the bride or the groom must also obtain and take to Cyprus a copy of her/his baptism/christening certificate as well as the name and address of her/his home church Minister as these documents & information have to be given to the Anglican Priest in Cyprus.

Catholic Church Weddings in Cyprus:
All Catholic weddings in Cyprus must be preceded by a civil ceremony (therefore, please also check requirements for ‘Civil Weddings’ as shown above).
A Catholic church wedding can only be permitted if the bride and the groom have not been previously married. To arrange your Catholic church wedding, you will need to tell your local Catholic priest that you wish to marry overseas and bring to him your and your future spouse’s Birth Certificate, plus the contact details (supplied to you by us) of the overseas priest who will conduct your marriage. Your local priest will then confirm to you which documents are required and he will be responsible to forward them to the overseas priest. Upon arrival at your resort, we shall assist you with any necessary visits required to complete the paperwork.

In-Resort Expenses & Visits in Cyprus:
Travel expenses for the various visits you need to make in-resort will need to be paid by yourself locally.
For weddings in Ayia Napa & Protaras, you will need to travel to the court in Paralimni,
and to the court in Limassol or Paphos for weddings in Latchi, Pissouri or Aphrodite’s Rock.
We assist you to arrange the visits and your Wedding Co-ordinator will meet you at the Town Hall.

Weddings in Greece: Legal Requirements & Documentation required
 

 

How soon do we need to book?
The notice is governed by how long it takes to process the paperwork at your nuptial resort . For Greece, as this varies between destinations, specific information on when we need to receive your documentation is shown below:

  • Rhodes: at least 7 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.
  • Crete: at least 6 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.
  • Corfu: at least 8 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 14 nights.
  • Skiathos: at least 6 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 14 nights.
  • Santorini: at least 6 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.
  • Halkidiki: at least 8 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 14 nights.
  • Zante: at least 7 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.
  • Kefalonia: at least 7 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.

Documentation required for Weddings in Greece:
You will need to SEND ALL DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW (relating to your status) TO WEDDINGS IN STYLE AFTER LEGALISATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED BY FCO:

As documents will not be returned to you, you can obtain ‘certified copies’ from a solicitor in the UK.

ADOPTION CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: An Adoption Certificate must be obtained if either the bride
or groom has been adopted.

DEED POLL CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: A Deed Poll Certificate must be obtained if either the bride or groom has changed her/his name for any reason (including personal reason; remarriage of a parent or
if the bride reverted to her maiden name after divorcing, etc.). This document must be stamped and signed
by a solicitor and must include the solicitor’s practice name and address plus the full name of the solicitor
who witnessed the change of name.

CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT - COMPULSORY: For weddings in Greece, both the bride and groom
must each obtain a Certificate of No Impediment as legal proof that they are both free to marry. This certificate is issued by your local Registry Office and must not be dated more than 3 months prior to your wedding date. Please also bear in mind that the certificates will take at least 2 weeks to obtain.

DECREE ABSOLUTE - IF APPLICABLE: An original Decree Absolute, carrying a coloured court stamp,
must be obtained if either the bride or groom has been previously married and is now divorced.

DEATH CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: A Death Certificate must be obtained if either the bride or groom
is widowed.

LEGALISATION OF DOCUMENTS - COMPULSORY: All the documents required for your civil wedding in Greece must be legalised by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. It is your responsibility to ensure this is done before any documents are forwarded to us.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all documents required  are legalised by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) at a cost of £28 per document plus an additional £6 to cover ‘Special Delivery’ postage when the FCO return the documents to Weddings in Style. Visit www.fco.co.uk for latest information. Please send your documents & credit card details to The Foreign & Commonwealth Office, plus an envelope with Weddings in Style ’ address (Weddings in Style, Castle House, 21 Station Road, New Barnet, Herts EN5 1PH) and a letter stating your travel destination and travel date to: The Legalisation Office, Norfolk House, 437 Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes, MK9 2AH - (Tel: 01908 295111).

TRANSLATION OF DOCUMENTS - COMPULSORY: For civil weddings in Greece, all documents required, relating to your status, must be translated in Greek. To make it easier and more economical for you, we have negotiated a special rate in resort for the translation of standards documents (Birth Certificates, Certificates of No Impediment and 2 copies of your Marriage Certificate*) and this has been included in the Official Paperwork cost . Any extra documents required, relating to your status, can be translated at a supplement (cost will be confirmed to you at the time of booking).
Important: Please bear in mind that none of the documents sent overseas will be returned to you as they need to be kept as official records by the local Authorities.
(*) = Your Marriage Certificate translated into English will be sent to you in UK approximately 3 weeks after your wedding).

Civil Weddings in Greece:
Please obtain all original documents listed above, relating to your status. Once they have been legalised by the FCO (see opposite column), documents need to be forwarded to Weddings in Style. The time required to process your documentation in Greece varies depending on your nuptial resort - exact information on when documents must reach Weddings in Style is shown above. Upon your arrival in Greece, your Wedding Co-ordinator will assist you to complete all the paperwork and make appointments regarding: (1) Your visit to the Registry Office to register your intent to marry; (2) Your return to visit the Registrar after your wedding.

Catholic Church Weddings in Greece:
A Catholic church wedding can only be permitted if the bride and the groom have not been previously married. Travel expenses for the various visits you need to make in-resort will need to be paid by yourself locally. We assist you to arrange the visits and your Wedding Co-ordinator at your resort will meet you at the Town Hall.

Weddings in Mauritius: Legal Requirements & Documentation required

For weddings in Mauritius we need at least 10 weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.

Documentation required for Weddings in Mauritius:
You will need to TAKE WITH YOU to MAURITIUS ALL DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW (relating to your status). You will ALSO need to send to Weddings in Style 3 photocopies of documents shown here as well as 3  photocopies of your passport’s first 6 pages or inside back page if you hold an EC passport.
All documents must be received by Weddings in Style at least 8 weeks before departure

IMPORTANT: For Mauritius, if the bride has been married before and the Decree Absolute is dated less
than 10 months before the new wedding date, a local doctor in Mauritius will have to give a certificate
of non pregnancy.

DEATH CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE: A Death Certificate must be obtained if either the bride or groom
is widowed.

Civil Weddings in Mauritius:
You will need to obtain and take with you to Mauritius all original documents listed above, relating
to your status.

Paperwork will be sent to Mauritius by Weddings in Style, awaiting your arrival and the original documents.
Our local agent will assist you locally to complete the various procedures and make appointments regarding: (1) Your visit to the main civil status office in Port Louis, (2) Your visit to the Court where you will swear an affidavit that you are single, (3) Your return to the main civil status office  and the wedding official who will marry you.
After the wedding our local representative will take the Marriage Certificate to the Prime Minister’s office to have it validated.

In-Resort Expenses & Visits in Mauritius:
For weddings in Mauritius, travelling expenses to the Town Hall are included in the wedding cost.

Weddings in Gozo: Legal Requirements & Documentation required
 

 

How soon do we need to book?
For weddings in Gozo, we need at least 10 weeks notice prior to your wedding but documents must not be dated any earlier than 12 weeks before your wedding date. Your stay must be a minimum of 7 nights.

Documentation required for Weddings in Gozo:
You will need to TAKE WITH YOU to GOZO ALL DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW (relating to your status) to give to your Wedding Co-ordinator during your first meeting. You will ALSO need to send to Weddings in Style certified copies of all original documents. All certified copies  must reach Weddings in Style 10 weeks prior to your wedding date but please note that these documents cannot be dated any earlier than 12 weeks before your wedding date.
Weddings in Style will forward the certified copies to the Wedding Co-ordinator in Gozo.


Important: All certified copies must be signed & stamped by a solicitor

RZ1 FORM (per couple) plus RZ2 FORM (per person).

PHOTOCOPY OF FULL BIRTH CERTIFICATE showing both parents names.

PLUS, IF APPLICABLE TO YOUR STATUS:
Certificate of first marriage.
Decree Absolute.
Certificate of Death of former spouse.
Adoption Certificate.

Affidavit
by 3rd person drawn up in the presence of a solicitor, stating that since the death of the former spouse or date of divorce, you have not re-married.

IMPORTANT: All above original documents required will be retained in Malta.

Civil Weddings in Gozo:
You will need to obtain and take with you to Gozo all original documents listed above, to give to your Wedding Co-ordinator in Gozo during your first meeting.
You will also need to send to Weddings in Style certified copies of all original documents. All certified copies  must reach Weddings in Style 10 weeks prior to your wedding date but please note that these documents cannot be dated any earlier than 12 weeks before your wedding date.
Weddings in Style will forward the certified copies to the Wedding Co-ordinator in Gozo.

In-Resort Expenses & Visits in Gozo:

Weddings in The Algarve: Legal Requirements & Documentation required
 

How soon do we need to book?
For weddings in The Algarve, we need at least 6weeks notice prior to your wedding. Your stay must be a minimum of 14 nights.

Documentation required for Weddings in The Algarve:
You will need to TAKE WITH YOU to The Algarve ALL DOCUMENTS LISTED (relating to your status) depending on wedding type you have booked. You will ALSO need to send to Weddings in Style 3 photocopies of documents shown here as well as 3  photocopies of your passport’s first 6 pages or inside back page if you hold an EC passport.
All documents must be received by Weddings in Style at least 6 weeks before departure
but please note that these documents cannot be dated any earlier than 6 months before your wedding date:

Civil Weddings in The Algarve:
Documentation required:
BIRTH CERTIFICATE - COMPUSLORY: A copy of your birth certificate must be translated into Portuguese by a certified translator at the Embassy and must be no older than six months old on the date of your wedding day.

PASSPORT - COMPULSORY: Both the bride and groom must be in possession of a 10-year British passport. Non-British passport holders must notify us at first contact.

CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT - COMPULSORY: This will be issued by the National Consulate of your country in Portugal.

DIVORCE PAPERS - IF APPLICABLE : The final divorce papers must be shown. A copy must be translated into Portuguese by a certified translator at the Embassy and must be no older than six months old on the date of your wedding day.

DEATH CERTIFICATE - IF APPLICABLE : If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown and must be no older than six months old on the date of your wedding day.

For a Civil ceremony in the Algarve, please obtain all original documents listed above, relating to your status. Once they have been legalised by the FCO, documents need to be forwarded to Weddings in Style at least 6 weeks prior to your wedding. Upon your arrival in The Algarve, your Wedding Co-ordinator will assist you to complete all the paperwork and make appointments regarding the various visits that are necessary.
No Witnesses are required for your Civil Wedding in The Algarve. By law the ceremony must take place in Portuguese and translated to your own language. As most registrars in Portugal do not speak English, your local Wedding Co-ordinator will guide you through this process.

For insurance purposes the registrars taxi fair to and from your venue must be paid for by yourself in resort, as this is not included in your wedding package.

Anglican Blessings in The Algarve:
Documentation required:
PASSPORT - COMPULSORY: Both the bride and groom must be in possession of a 10-year British passport. Non-British passport holders must notify us at first contact.

In order to have an Anglican Blessing in The Algarve, you must complete a civil ceremony in your home country and bring this paperwork with you to your religious ceremony in Portugal.
All the paperwork will be processed once you arrive in the resort. We shall assist you locally to complete the various procedures including your visit to meet the person responsible to conduct your wedding/blessing.
The service is similar to what we are used to in the UK and the priest that will conduct your ceremony will be English.

Catholic Blessings in The Algarve:
Documentation required:
PASSPORT - COMPULSORY: Both the bride and groom must be in possession of a 10-year British passport. Non-British passport holders must notify us at first contact.

- The paperwork must be completed by the priest in your local church or by the priest that will marry you. This paperwork must be completed exactly as it would be in the UK to ensure you are legally married. Please use the paperwork requirements as a guide only, your local British Priest and your Portuguese Wedding Co-ordinator will be able to advise you of the final procedures.
- You must complete a civil ceremony in your home country and send this paperwork to Weddings in Style who will then forward it to Portugal.
- 1. Formal letter from your parish priest granting permission for the wedding to be performed in 'the name of Portuguese church.
- 2. Your priest should also secure a letter from the Bishop of the parish also stating permission for the wedding to be performed (as shown in point 1) and this letter should also be written on letterhead.
- 3. The letter from the priest must also state that you have fulfilled all PRE CANA procedures, and should include the certificate (if a certificate was done) showing that you attended the premarital classes.
- 4. The original prenuptial inquiry form has to be issued by your parish and be on formal church letterhead of your Parish.
- 5. ALL certificates of baptism, first communion and confirmation must be sent together with the prenuptial inquiry form and letters mentioned in points 1 & 2 and must also be stamped by the local Bishop’s office.
- 6. If one of you is not Catholic you will be required to obtain another document such as 'Permission of mixed religions' to testify that the wedding celebration can be performed by the Portuguese Church
- 7. All the documents mentioned (excluding point 6) MUST have been sealed or stamped by the Bishop’s parish office.
- 8. We will then advise where to send this documentation.

Options for a Catholic Priest in Portugal:
- Bring your own local Priest (Preferred Option)
- Your chosen Church in Portugal will invite an English Speaking, Portuguese Priest to perform the Ceremony. (Please note: there are only two English speaking priests in the Algarve so please consult with us before planning this option).
- The Portuguese Priest will perform the ceremony in Portuguese and your local Wedding Co-ordinator will organise a translator for you.

Symbolic/Humanist Ceremony in The Algarve:
Documentation required:
PASSPORT - COMPULSORY: Both the bride and groom must be in possession of a 10-year British passport. Non-British passport holders must notify us at first contact.

This option offers a very personal ceremony and can be tailored to suit each individual client. Although this is not a legal contract, the service can be customised to look like the ‘Real Wedding Day’.
Our Celebrant will have a detailed consultation with you to ensure the ceremony is exactly as you wish.
To personalise this ceremony further you may choose a close family member or friend to read poems.
Couples usually complete their civil wedding in the UK without telling friends and family and celebrate their wedding with our Symbolic Celebrant in Portugal.
